Purpose: To advance and provide a guide for research using the Neuman Systems Model and to build ties among Neuman Systems Model researchers.

Purpose:

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding contribution to use of the NSM as a research model.  Examples of such contributions include literature reviews, methodology, instrument development, concept clarification efforts, etc.

Funding:

Up to five $100 NSM Research Fellow Awards will be made.

Eligibility:

  1. Educational and/or experiential preparation in use of the NSM

  2. Contribution to use of the NSM as a research model

  3. Potential for future contribution to the NSM Research Institute

  4. The fellow must agree to make a presentation at the next NSM symposium. Symposium Fees will be waived but the fellow must cover travel expenses. In the event that the Fellow cannot attend the symposium, arrangements can be made by the Fellow to have his/her work presented by a symposium attendee.

The Patricia Chadwick Research Grant

Purpose:

The purpose of this research grant is to fund a research project, by a novice researcher (see below), that will lead to the development of new nursing knowledge framed within the NSM.

Award Cycle:

This is a biennial award. The work (to date) must be presented at the following NSM Symposium (odd numbered years) where the awardee will be formally recognized.

Application Deadline:

Due to the unique timelines of novice researchers, there will be an open application process. One award is made per biennium. Interested applicants are encouraged to make personal contact with Dr. Eileen Gigliotti at the email address below.

Funding:

One $1000 grant will be awarded. A proposed budget must be attached.

Eligibility:

  1. The awardee must be a novice researcher (e.g., doctoral candidate or within 3 years after graduation from a research doctoral program).

  2. If a doctoral candidate, the proposal must have been accepted by the candidate’s committee and a letter of support from the advisor must be attached.

  3. The awardee must sign the agreement to present his/her findings at the next NSM symposium, if the award is made. In the event that the awardee cannot be present, it is the responsibility of the awardee to make arrangements with an attendee to present his/her work. Symposium Fees will be waived but the awardee must cover travel expenses.

  4. Award will be made based on the proposed contribution to the NSM of the candidate’s project and his/her background with use of the NSM.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

SUBMIT Electronically

  1. ABSTRACT

    • Provide a succinct and accurate description of the proposed project. Include the overall objective of the project, the methods to be used, and the project’s relevance to Neuman Systems Model knowledge development. Abstract should be no more than 500 words.

  2. NARRATIVE

    • Specific Aims: Include the overall objective or long term goal as well as specific aims, research questions and/or hypotheses that will be addressed.

    • Background/Significance: A critical analysis of relevant literature is expected. This literature must include, but is not limited to, previous work on specific concepts done by researchers using the Neuman Systems Model. Identify and describe the conceptual model, middle range theory, and empirical research methods components of the study. Describe the potential significance of this work both to nursing and to further development of the NSM.

  3. HUMAN SUBJECTS/ANIMAL PROTECTION

    • Include documentation that human subjects or animal protection approval has been received from all relevant institutions.

Advisor’s Evaluation: If the principal investigator is a student, and the project is for a thesis or dissertation, documentation of committee approval must be attached.
